Penn State wrestling has a long and storied history dating back to the early 1900s. The program was established in 1909 and has consistently been one of the top programs in the country. In the early years, the team was led by legendary coach Charles "Doc" Speidel, who led the team to its first national championship in 1953.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the program continued to thrive under coaches John Fritz and Brad Dillman, winning multiple national championships and producing numerous All-Americans. In the 1980s and 1990s, the program reached new heights under coach Rich Lorenzo, winning four national championships in a row from 1991 to 1994 and producing numerous All-Americans and Olympic medalists.

In the 2000s and 2010s, the program continued to be a dominant force under coach Cael Sanderson, winning eight national championships in a row from 2011 to 2018 and producing numerous All-Americans and Olympic medalists. Today, Penn State wrestling remains one of the top programs in the country and continues to produce elite wrestlers and coaches.
